Information on Tenerife Holidays
Tenerife holidays are popular with holidaymakers the world over on account of its glorious climate, rarely dropping below fifteen degrees centigrade even in the winter months. The occasional rainfall helps to keep the lush vegetation to the North of the island verdant, which is turn supports a host of exotic plants and animals. Nature lovers are drawn to the Teide National Park during their holiday in Tenerife, home to Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain standing at two thousand metres. This protected area offers visitors the unique experience of seeing snow at the peak whilst fellow holidaymakers bake away on the beaches below.
Tenerife Resort Activities and Beaches
As a volcanic island beaches on Tenerife were sparse and consisted wholly of black sand. Tourist demand has since created a number of man-made beaches sporting imported golden sand, the most popular of which are Los Gigantes and San Juan in the West down to Fanabe in the South. Regular boat trips leave from the beaches islands, ranging from daylong booze cruises to catamaran and what-watching trips. Puerto Colon in the Tenerife resort of Playa de las Americas and the port at Los Cristianos are the main departure points for most excursions but check with your tour operator for more details. The more adventurous sea-farer may want to try their hand at big game fishing where blue marlin and hammerhead sharks are popular trophies.
Natural Wonders
The Teide National Park is home to an astounding array of animals and plants at the base of Mount Teide. Visitors can either hike or take the cable car to the summit from where you can stand in the snow and look down to the sunbathers on the beaches below.
Piramides de Guimar
South of Santa Cruz, the capital of the island, these mysterious pyramids can be found. Archaeologists have failed to identify the origin, or purpose, of the six stepped pyramids and much debate remains over whether they are random piles or reminiscent of the similar monuments found in Peru and Mexico. If the mystery becomes too confusing you can always retire to the nearby cafe before exploring the life-sized replica of reed ship thought to be made in the honour of Heyerdahl.
Masca
Thought to be a pirate's hideaway, this picturesque village has only just become accessible with the opening of the Santiago del Teide road. Full of hairpin bends and balanced on the cliff tops; nervous travellers may prefer to brave the two-hour hike to the North-western tip of the island.
