Puerto Del Carmen And Matagorda

Puerto del Carmen is the main resort on Lanzarote and whilst boasting a fantastic 2-mile stretch of beach and a stunning coastline, it is more built up than other areas. Most of the action centres around The Strip, the main road running parallel to the beach. Restaurants, cafes, bars, stalls and shops can all be found here, selling everything from suntan lotion to cds at all times of day and night.
Matagorda is a smaller complex built just outside Puerto del Carmen, although most visitors find the facilities in the main resort worth the short car ride back into town for shopping and entertainment.

Daytime
During the day shopping and sunbathing are the main activities taking place in Puerto del Carmen, although being centrally located all amenities on the island are within easy access. A trip to the Sunday market at Teguise is the ideal place for picking up souvenirs and gifts, but shops on The Strip and in the Old Town are generally better for duty-free electrical goods and clothes.

Puerto del Carmen does boast its own beautiful beach where all manner of water sports can be arranged, although if you fancy a change of scene scuba-diving and boat trips are available daily. Away from the sea there is tennis, golf and squash amenities available at many of the hotels as well as horse riding a little further afield. The dramatic volcanic scenery typical to the island can also be admired on a daytrip to the nearby Timanfaya National Park.

Evening Entertainment
Puerto del Carmen is undoubtedly the party capital of Lanzarote; exemplified by the huge number of bars and influx of revellers from neighbouring resorts as night falls. Eating can be as much of an experience as you want it to be; from fine dining in the Old Town to fast food joints and International cuisine on The Strip. For those wanting a peaceful night and to enjoy their meal at leisure, a taxi ride out to the old capital of Teguise makes a pleasant change with a lovely atmosphere and some excellent restaurants.

Serious partygoers however will want to stay in Puerto del Carmen where the fun really starts in the evenings. The English, Irish and Scottish bars along The Strip are popular places to get the evening started, although the numerous cocktail bars in the Centre Atlantico also have a good atmosphere. From there the main nightspots are The Hippodrome or Caesars for some serious dancing, although the risque comedy drag show at Lady Muck's bar or the Titi Trollop Show, are good fun for an adult crowd.
